Save the Children Reveals Southern Floods Affect Nearly 400,000 Children, at Least 7 Deaths, Urges All Sectors to Accelerate Child Protection

BANGKOK, November 26, 2025 – Save the Children Thailand expresses deep concern over the severe flooding in the South, which is impacting a large number of children across several provinces. Reports indicate at least 7 children have died, and many families have had to evacuate urgently. Meanwhile, hundreds of schools remain closed, leaving children without access to learning or essential basic services.

The flood situation remains continuously severe, with days of heavy rain leading to rising water levels in many areas and posing risks of flash floods, landslides, and electrical leakage. Many residents have been forced to evacuate their homes, lacking clean drinking water, food, and safe spaces. Numerous young children are at risk of drowning, illness, psychological impact from uncertainty, and disruption to their education.

Thachamach Krairit, Director of Programmes and Humanitarian at Save the Children Thailand, stated "In a crisis, children are the most vulnerable group. Therefore, the disaster response must prioritize the specific needs of children, including safety, mental health, access to learning, and protection from violence or family separation.

We urge all sectors—government, local authorities, schools, educational agencies, and civil society organizations—to work together with a child-centered approach. This includes establishing safe spaces for children, providing easily understood communication, and ensuring assistance mechanisms reach all families equitably."

Urgent actions required for comprehensive child protection in this situation include: setting up safe spaces for children in evacuation or temporary shelters; providing parents with easy-to-understand safety information and guidelines; preparing essential supplies such as children's clothing, clean drinking water, and hygiene kits; providing mental health care for children and caregivers through psychosocial support activities; and restoring learning so children can return to continuous education without being left behind.

Additionally, Save the Children Thailand has prepared emergency kits for infants and older children, which include necessary items such as diapers, clothing, hygiene kits, and school supplies, ready for distribution to affected areas. We are working with local agencies to rapidly distribute the aid.
