Save the Children Thailand is deeply concerned and saddened by reports of ongoing border situation impacting civilian areas, including homes, hospitals, and villages, leading to the tragic loss of lives, including children.
International humanitarian law clearly prohibits attacks that do not distinguish between military targets and civilians. Strikes targeting homes, schools, or other civilian areas, especially those where children are present, are not only unacceptable but may also constitute breaches of international law.
In the wake of the attacks, schools in affected areas have been forced to close, depriving children not only of education but also of a critical sense of safety, stability, and normalcy. Many children are now displaced, frightened, and cut off from the support systems that schools and communities provide—deepening their vulnerability both emotionally and physically.
Save the Children strongly condemns all forms of violence that harm civilians, especially children, who are the most vulnerable and least protected in times of crisis. Every child has the right to protection from harm, to live in safe environments, and to access appropriate physical and emotional care.
We urgently call on all parties involved to respect international humanitarian laws and take immediate action to:
- Cease indiscriminate violence in civilian areas affecting civilians and children.
- Ensure secure environment to establish child-friendly safe spaces, where children can play, learn, and access psychosocial support in a secure environment.
- Ensure the presence of teachers, caregivers, or mental health professionals to support children’s emotional well-being.
- Ensure a safe setting to promote continued learning and recreational activities where children can safely learn and play.
As an organization committed to protecting children’s rights, Save the Children Thailand is closely monitoring the situation and stands in solidarity with all children and families affected by this devastating violence. We urgently call on all parties to prioritize the protection and dignity of civilians—especially children—and to work urgently toward a peaceful resolution that prevents further harm.
